Wei Shaojun: China's semiconductor industry should shift to a "product centered" development model
At the industry event held on August 17, Wei Shaojun, chairman of the IC Design Branch of China Semiconductor Industry Association and professor of the School of Integrated Circuits of Tsinghua University, delivered a keynote speech, "Thinking about China's Semiconductor Industry in 20 Years".
Wei Shaojun first pointed out that, from the perspective of China's and the world's economic growth process, information technology has become the main driving force for modern economic growth. Based on this law, Professor Wei Shaojun proposed that the development of the semiconductor industry needs to adhere to long-term investment, pursue the overall situation and long-term development. It is through the unremitting efforts of China's semiconductor industry people over the past decades that China has formed a number of integrated circuit industry centers, The five major industrial sectors (design, manufacturing, seal testing, equipment and materials) are rare in the world. The output value of the "three industries" of design, manufacturing and seal testing has also reached a more reasonable pattern. The industrial structure has been continuously optimized, and the R&D and industrialization of high-end general-purpose chips have continued to make breakthroughs.
While affirming the development achievements, Professor Wei Shaojun further pointed out that the development of the semiconductor industry is like sailing against the current. If you don't advance, you will go back. The industry people should have firm confidence and keep moving forward on the road of industrial upgrading.
Wei Shaojun analyzed that China's semiconductor industry has been deployed with manufacturing as the center for a long time, and should now shift to a product centered industrial development model.
He combed and said that, at present, the innovation capability of China's local semiconductor enterprises needs to be improved. Taking 22 chip design enterprises listed on the Science and Technology Innovation Board as an example, although their average R&D investment intensity reached 25.5%, significantly higher than that of American enterprises, due to the low revenue volume, the absolute scale of R&D investment is still very limited. It is necessary to explore other ways to promote the innovation capability of enterprises.
Wei Shaojun also said that the development of China's semiconductor industry should not only make up for weaknesses, but also focus on forging long boards, and organically integrate with advantageous industries at the application level, such as 5G, to achieve leapfrog development.
At the end of the speech, Professor Wei Shaojun, citing the famous saying in the Book of Rites that "if you don't do it in advance, you will lose it", pointed out that the development of the integrated circuit industry will not be achieved overnight. It will take a long time to stick to it and solve problems constantly. The industry people need to think more, what problems will be encountered in the development, how to solve them, and make corresponding preparations.
Finally, Wei Shaojun said that the development of China's semiconductor industry will not change because of some people or things, nor will it stagnate because of external pressure. Relying on China's huge market, hardworking Chinese people, and all industry colleagues working day and night, China's semiconductor industry development will surely reach the other side of the road of victory.
